Onboarding
LTG - Learning and Development Partner
Brief:
LTG’s HR team highlighted an alarmingly high turnover rate for employees with less than two years’ service. Via a series of focus groups and surveys with new starters and managers, we gathered both qualitative and quantitative data on the existing new starter experience.
We found that the quality of onboarding differed greatly depending on the individual’s manager, business unit, and region. In some cases new employees were receiving no welcome at all and were largely being left to fend for themselves.
Additionally, the business was struggling to cross-sell services and products between brands as very few colleagues had an understanding of the company’s offering or had any contact with colleagues from different business units.
The Challenge:
Multiple brands with different cultures
Reluctant stakeholders
Skills:
Content scoping
Training needs analysis
Storyboarding
Articulate Rise
Stakeholder management
The Solution:
A blend of digital learning and resources with a face-to-face workshop.
Using the insights gained from consulting with new starters, managers, and internal teams, I designed an improved onboarding journey that ensures that every new starter has access to the information they need to perform in their role, feels supported by their manager, and learns more about how they fit into the wider business.
I created a suite of engaging blended learning solutions including four short e-learning courses introducing the business, our culture, and our internal teams; reworked intranet pages to facilitate easier access to key information; a preboarding welcome brochure delivered by the HR team to all new starters; bite-sized animations with information about policies, procedures, and internal team; and an online welcome workshop, giving new starters an opportunity to get to know their colleagues and build relationships across the business’s brands.
After a promising initial pilot with several new colleagues, I adapted the programme to incorporate relevant feedback focused primarily on the user experience of our learning platform. The onboarding journey received positive feedback from new starters and hiring managers and the full launch correlated with a decrease in the new starter turnover rate.
