LEO Learning - Learning Designer

Brief:

The Humanitarian Leadership Academy help people in the humanitarian sector and beyond to prepare for and respond to crises. Through its Kaya eLearning platform and accompanying mobile app, the Academy has around 120,000 active learners. The platform houses a mix of freely available English, French and Arabic courses, on-demand webinars, details of face-to-face training, videos, and assessments.

Humanitarian aid workers in conflict zones are under a great deal of pressure and their decisions are crucial in protecting vulnerable people. They need to know how to navigate networks of support and challenging circumstances to deliver the best possible outcomes for the people they aid.

The Challenge:

  • Time poor learners under significant pressure

  • Emotionally and culturally sensitive content

  • Local contexts may vary

  • Possible bandwidth and device restrictions

Skills:

  • Content scoping

  • Storyboarding

  • Scenario design

  • Branching scenario design

The Solution:

An illustrated scenario-driven e-learning course.

We told the stories of three fictional children in conflict zones: Hana, Alexander, and Safi, each with their own challenges. These characters and their stories were derived from the real world experience of our SMEs and designed to address a number of the most common issues faced by humanitarian aid workers. Learners progress through each scenario in turn, making decisions at key points in the story and accessing relevant tutorial content between decisions. During these main topics learners are free to explore each scenario and see the different possible outcomes, creating a safe environment to try alternate solutions before attempting the assessment.
